Bitches Ain't Shit

posted Tuesday, 21 February 2006

So I hope you guys got/get the chance to listen to the podcast. Any feedback would be much appreciated, as we don't really know what we're doing in terms of recording/mixing/editing/importing/posting podcasts. So honestly, if it's too loud or quiet, if you've got downloading issues, whatever, let us know and we'll try to fix it. I feel that it's kind of like NPR. With dick jokes.

You guys really have been sucking on those song lyrics. The three Valentine songs were as follows:

"Valentine" by Old 97s, "Valentine's Day" by Bruce Springsteen, and "Happy Valentine's Day" by Outkast.

Thursday's was "What's Your Fantasy" by Ludacris.

I'll try to dumb it down for you from here on out. Today's song lyric: "With or Without You. With or Without You, oh-oh." (HINT: The band that sings this song is called U2).

Alright, I feel it's time again for our monthly checkin with the top five most played songs on my ipod.

1) "Speak Slow" by Tegan and Sara, I was brutally mocked for listening to Tegan and Sara the last time one of their songs made an appearance on here. I don't care. I like them more each day. I believe these two are lesbian twin sisters, although they are a good deal more talented/less hot than T.A.T.U. They always sound terribly depressed, their songs are really catchy and they've got unique voices and harmonies. Good.

2) "Letter From An Occupant" by New Pornographers, Man I am really coming off as cool so far. I have endlessly mentioned this band on here before, they're just pure gold. This is off their first album, "Mass Romantic" and I could listen to it 100 times in a row and not grow tired of it. I did apparently, if it hit this spot. Guys and girls sing in this band, Neko Case sings this one and her voice is incredible. NO IDEA what the lyrics mean. I don't even know what the title means.

3) "Alex Chilton" by The Replacements, The Replacements are one of the great unsung bands. I was always a little shocked Kurt Cobain never cited them as an influence, (which surely would have upped their popularity, as it did The Pixies), because he clearly took a lot from them. I would imagine less discerning listeners couldn't tell his voice from Paul Westerberg's. The Replacements, like Nirvana, were a pop band who sang/played so rough and raw that they sounded like hard rock. This is one of their poppiest songs, and is maybe their best. Love that breakdown in the middle. And there's cowbell! I DO know what this one is about, Alex Chilton was the lead singer of Big Star.

4) "Old Hat" by Harvey Danger, I need to make a post about underrated bands of the 90s, bands who were essentially one-hit wonders, but were so much better than most think. Harvey Danger might be at the top of that list. Their first album, ("Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone"), the one with the one hit ("Flagpole Sitta"), is pretty much flawless. It opens with "Carlotta Valdez," surely the most rocking song about an Alfred Hitchcock movie ever recorded. (Unless we're counting "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads, then it's a tossup. By the way, Meredith, if you're reading this, you have had my Talking Heads Live CDs for nearly a year. You have pushed the limits of "borrowing" as far as they can go. Kindly return them. Yeah, I called you out in public). "Private Helicopter" and "Wooly Muffler" are fascinating dissections of relationships gone wrong that don't skimp on the asskickery, and then there's "Old Hat," which is stupid good. I think I might love every song in which a girl and a guy sing, that's why I love the Pixies so much. This guy's lyrics are pretty wordy and complicated but I think this one's about how you can't write anything good when you're happy. Which I think is true.

I just realized I don't like every song in which a guy and a girl sing. That would mean I'd have to like the works of Ja Rule. Unless we're not counting that as singing, in which case I stand by what I said. What's that song of his "The way you look, the way you move, the way you fuck, the way you groove...." whatever the hell that was? Terrible.

5) "Bitches Ain't Shit" by Ben Folds. Remember that DESERVED one hit wonder of the 90s, Dynamite Hack? They did an acoustic version of the rap song "Boyz N The Hood" that was kinda funny? This takes a similar idea and makes it MUCH better, both in terms of comedy and musicality. Taking one of the finest Dr. Dre songs and making it into a piano ballad was a genius idea, and this is about as good as it could have sounded. "Bitches ain't shit but hos and tricks. Lick on these nuts and suck the dick." He's got a point. He may not have been a real doctor, but he knows what he's talking about. You should download it.

WOW! Can't make fun of me this week! No showtunes! No teen pop divas! (Although Kelly Clarkson remains in the top ten at Number 7). I'm proud of myself.

Alright, I realize I've promised several blogs to all of you, I know I swore I'd do one on good gym mixes, one on who I think should be nominated for Oscars, and one on my top ten movies of the year. Those are all coming by end of month. Also, if you have any questions/issues you'd like us to tackle in the podcast, please leave it here or e-mail me at patrickjohnwalsh@gmail.com. You can be anonymous. I'd love to have a "listener mail" portion like an actual radio show. Questions about sex and relationships will get top priority, because we don't know about much else.

And as usual, leave me your Ipod "Top Five." Be honest!

Oh, and the lyric was from "With Or Without You." By U2.

Some qualms I have with this current post:

1. I have expressed my opinions before about Tegan and Sara. Again I express my hatred for this band that I feel is only liked by most because they are the "Punk Emo Punk Shit Rock" version of the Olsen Twins(I would assume that this doesn't include you Pat, but I know that is why 2 of our St. Louis punk rock friends like them)

2. The New Pornographers are very boring. Perhaps it was just the one album I listened to, but that is more than I am usually willing to give a band, and I found it boring. Also, Pat you are boring. Slam!

3. You just called an album with Flag Pole Sitaaaaa "flawless". There is an inherent logical flaw there.

4. I agree about the Ben Folds

That is all for now, I will list my top five so that you can berate me later. However I haven't used mine much, so I will likely have a similar 5.

Mike,

I clearly don't abide by some strict punk rock code, and I honestly would put Tegan and Sara into the "pop" category. I don't find them much different than, say, a Kelly Clarkson. Maybe they have a bit more "street cred" but the kind of people who judge things based on "street cred" should probably be thrown into the...street.

New Pornographers, obviously not boring. I would ask what album you listened to, but they are all gold, so I don't know where that leave us.

I kind of meant the album around the hit, "Flagpole Sitta," although I like that song, and I'm sure you do deep down too, (Or at least did before it was played one trillion times in the summer of...1998 I believe. Give the CD a listen, its in every dollar bin in every used CD store in the country.

Typically sunny feedback, Mike, thanks.

Sam, get an ipod.

Matthew definitely wins for coolest dude ever to post a comment on this "blog" (that includes the author of this blog himself). My iPod top 25 or whatever remains largely the same, and I'll tell you why: because since late July, I have undertaken to listen to every song on it, in alphabetical order. Sure, I've strayed from that direct course in favor of new albums or special road trip or game night mixes, but generally when I'm just chillaxin' and listenin', I'm doin' the iQuest. I just got into the "U"s today, and I'll give one American dollar to the first person to identify what the first song starting with "U" was. Guess away!

Anyway, yeah, my Top 25 was remarkably like it was last time. Babe the Blue Ox, Chuck Berry, Dinosaur Jr. That's a period to end the sentence, not to end "Jr," which has no period as it appears in the name of the band "Dinosaur Jr," who are awesome.

Most Pixies songs feature just a dude singin', it is the precious few (though all are glorious) that feature a man-woman duet. And by your "I love all man-woman duet singing songs" claim (which yes, I know you've since rescinded), you'd like "Tonight I Celebrate My Love," perhaps the most boring pop song ever sung (in this case, by Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson. How did that become a hit? IT'S SO FUCKING BORING!).

Now I'm downloading yer podcast, it'll take awhile cuz I'm too poor and too retro to be on anything but a dial-up connection.

Alex Chilton was also the lead singer of the Box Tops. You might never know it by just listenin' to him, though.

Maybe you want to hand over 350 and buy me one, Pat? I'm a cheap bastard. I covet the iPod, but I have yet to bring myself to actually shell out the dough. My discman works just fine. I asked for one for Christmas, but, like everything else I asked for, I didn't get it. Pity party for me.

I forgot to look at my iTunes last night.

ROB: Was it- "Unbelievable", "Unbreak My Heart", "Under the Bridge Downtown", or "Unforgettable"?

Bryan, I still say your most played list is too respectable to be true. You know there's a Sugar Ray song in there somewhere.

Jill, I've heard about Muse for years and never gave them a try. Maybe I will.

Matt, incredible playlist, although you're denying the best of Eddie Money: "Take Me Home Tonight."

Rob, While it's true that most Pixies songs couldn't qualify as full on "duets," Kim Deal's backing vocals on at least half of their songs are so strong (and sexy) that I consider them equal partnerships.

I knew somebody would try to call me out on the guy/girl thing, I will concede that "Tonight I Celebrate My Love" is an unfortunate song.

Let me know what you think of the podcast.

I did know Alex Chilton was lead singer of the Box Tops, but part of me doesn't believe it.

None of the above, Sam.

Pat, you think Kim does backing vocals (or more) on at least half of Pixies songs? I'd like to analyze that statistically, I don't think I believe it.

The Podcast was good, funny stuff. If it were an E-Bay auction, I'd write "Would download again" in the feedback.

The other night at a party Alex Chilton came up and it was established that , for him to come up again so soon and in such a vastly different forum is bizarre!
