My Favorite Movies of 2007

posted Wednesday, 2 January 2008

I'm in NYC for my birthday and the lesser holidays, so excuse the infrequent posting. I've seen so many movies that I need to write about on here, but haven't been able to find the time and energy. In the meantime, head over to Cinematical and check out My Favorite Movies of 2007. I put a lot of time into it, these lists are always so frustrating to write, but such fun to hear feedback on. Even when the Cinematical commenters hit me with delicately crafted quips like "NO TRANSFAURMERS?!?! UR GAY!"

For further reading, here is My Top Ten of 2006.

And my Top Ten of 2005.

Frequent commenter, recent newlywed, and American Hero Dale recently asked in the comments why I never give a movie the 'F' rating. It's not a conscious thing, really, but I guess it's the same reason I rarely give out an A+. If I give a movie an A+, it better be an all-time classic, worthy of inclusion on My 100 Favorite Movies of All Time (a list I resolve to publish on this site before 2009). If I give a movie an 'F," it better be absolutely without worth, and should be one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

In high school I saw every movie released, so I saw a lot more 'F' flicks. These days, I'm a bit more choosy with my time. I don't need to see Daddy Day Camp to know it's crap, so I just don't see it. Dale asked what movie I would give an 'F' to -- a few that come to mind are Battlefield Earth, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure, Flubber, Bicentennial Man, Father's Day, Patch Adams...a lot of Robin Williams...

Below is the list of all the 2007 movies I saw this year, with ratings. And nope, not an A+ or an F in the bunch! I still have a few left to see, and they'll be added to the list in the coming days. Several of these ratings have changed slightly since my original reviews, I didn't have the time to look all my ratings up, so I had to go by how I feel about them right now...

Happy Birthday man! What fuels your relentless distaste for Robin "Furball" Williams?

I've enjoyed reading your reviews over the year. I agree with you more than I disagree with you. My favorite movies of the year were: Juno (which you were too harsh on gradewise given that you seemed to have enjoyed the movie), The Simpsons Movie, and No Country for Old Men. It really was a really decent year for movies (I also particularly enjoyed Once and the Lives of Others).

Can't wait for the 2007 music list. You turned me on to so much great music in your 2006 list (Cat Power, Neko Case, The Hold Steady, Jenny Lewis (so awesome!!)).

NCFOM is probably going to end up at the top of my list as well. But, man, I really, really hated Knocked Up. I think I laughed like 3 times. The rest bored me or pissed me off. Superbad was far superior.

"A few movies I would give an F to are NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS (at this point I reached for my shovel to kill you) VACATION 2: COUSIN EDDIE'S ISLAND ADVENTURE (and at this point I set it back down and nodded smugly; I knew you weren't about to say what I thought you were)."

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday, sir.

But man, a B for There Will Be Blood?

You know, I think you just didn't get it.

ScribeLA,

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris Vaughn,

Thank you, sir. I always liked the man, but then in the late 90s or so, I just snapped. I had had enough. He needs to be tranquilized.

Nutsy,

Thanks!

David,

Glad to have you, sir. And it was the best year for movies in quite some time.

Erik,

Glad the music list gave you some suggestions. This year, all I listened to was Britney's "Gimme More" on an endless loop, so it might not be as exciting a list. I kid. And you HATED Knocked Up? Really? I've got to say, Superbad only choked a couple laughs out of me, even though I did enjoy it. Different strokes. (Also the title of a pretty decent porno I watched once.)

Danny,

You kill people with shovels?

Jackson,

Oh, I GOT IT! I GOT IT BABY!

More thoughts in my review, coming soon.

I laughed a few times at Knocked Up -- when she tells him she's pregnant at dinner, the first Kristen Wiig appearance (the third or fourth became redundant and a lot less funny - kind of like most SNL skits). I thought the Las Vegas trip was misguided and dragged the picture down. And, you know, I'm willing to suspend disbelief for almost anything, but this woman falling for this man was utterly ridiculous.

Loved the rest on your list and am looking forward to seeing several that haven't made their way to my neck of the woods (I really, really miss NYC around the end of the year -- the Angelika, the UWS Angelika whose name escapes me, usually one or two end of the year art films at all multiplexes).

I saw Atonement today and it blew me away. I didn't read the book, so I can't compare. I thought the photography, the flash "aheads" were brilliant. The scene at Dunkirk alone was amazing. I didn't notice at the time but Husband told me that 5 minutes of that scene was one shot. Pretty incredible. I'm a bit depressed and full of hatred for Briony, but it was a thing of beauty despite the ugliness.

You give ratings to things, I don't...SO...I've finally (finally) posted a new blog! Worst of the year! I'm working on the best, too, so keep an eye out for that. I got your first Rob and Big from iTunes, it'll be the first time I've seen the show. I don't watch MTV. I have a soul. And a penis. But anything for you and Sonny. -M
